For the most part, the pictures in this album were taken in my final term at Merton College, Oxford. I collated them into an album and provided notes on each photograph. Because I was young and cheerful, the notes are somewhat jocular.
Since the prints are fading now, and the prospect of reprinting scarcely likely to survive any but the most generous cost-benefit analysis, I have decided to preserve the contents of the album digitally. I hope that it will be more appealing than Damien Hirst's shark preserved in formaldehyde.
The photographs were all taken with my parents' cheap viewfinder camera. Shutter speeds were 125, 60, 30 and B. Everything was manual, so I used a handheld light meter. Electronic flash units were just coming out: some of the earlier pictures were taken using (expensive!) bulb flash, which sometimes failed to go off.
